WFP Emergency Food Assistance to people affected by unrest in Syria

Progetto concluso

Due to a gradual deterioration of the food security situation in Syria, which includes increases in food and fuel prices as well as a reduction in agricultural and livestock production, the UN estimates that 4 million people are food insecure throughout the country. WFP estimates that 3.3 million people are IDPs and an additional 0.7 million are highly vulnerable residents in rural and urban areas. In response, WFP – in partnership with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and 19 other local organizations– will provide monthly food assistance to 4 million people in all 14 governorates of Syria.

Contesto

The crisis in Syria is a complex humanitarian situation. According to UN sources, it is marked by increased internal displacements, destruction of infrastructure, economic decline, a slow-onset crisis in food insecurity, reduction in agricultural production and risks of outbreaks of communicable and water-borne diseases. Further, farmers are facing a combination of decreasing availability of key agricultural inputs (like seeds, fertilizers and irrigation equipment), inadequate water supply and increased prices. Coinciding with this is the disruption of food supply networks and physical access to markets, both of which have been greatly hampered by insecurity. Fuel prices continue to increase and affect food processing and transportation costs as well as household energy bills for heating and cooking, which continues to place strain on household budgets.
