Swiss Deputy Ambassador attends contract signing ceremony at the Government of Serbia

In the presence of the Swiss Deputy Ambassador, Mr. Jean-Luc Oesch, the Mayor of Uzice, Ms. Jelena Rakovic Radivojevic and the media, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mining and Energy, Prof. Dr. Zorana Mihajlovic today signed a contract with the contractor Credo. The contract is for the implementation of energy efficiency measures in three schools and one kindergarten in Uzice. This contract, supported by Switzerland and worth EUR 1.5 M, will contribute to the increased comfort of 1,300 children and education professionals, savings in greenhouse gas emissions of 466 tons/year and 1,310 MWh/year of energy savings.

During the signing of the contract on the revitalization of three primary schools and preschools in Uzice, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that Serbia has provided sufficient funds to improve energy efficiency, because this is a national project and goal. She said that Serbia’s energy policy is not only based on how much energy is produced and consumed, but also on measures that have been established this year, including increases in energy efficiency. Mihajlovic said that the project on the rehabilitation of three primary schools and a kindergarten in Uzice is an example of how Serbia, with the support of the Swiss Government, is helping and encouraging improvements in energy efficiency. The works will start in January next year. "The concrete results will be a significant reduction in harmful gas emissions and financial savings. CO2 emissions will be 80% lower and consumption will be 70% lower. In addition, it is important that both children and teachers will have better conditions," she said.

Swiss Deputy Ambassador, Mr. Jean-Luc Oesch stressed that Switzerland is supporting the improvement of municipal energy efficiency management in partnership with the Ministry for Mining and Energy. The total Swiss contribution to these efforts through this project amounts to EUR 9 M, including the contract signed today. “This year, we are celebrating 30 years of bilateral Swiss-Serbian cooperation. What started with humanitarian aid and migration assistance in very difficult times, in 1991, has over the years developed into a comprehensive bilateral cooperation program. Energy and climate related cooperation will remain an important area of cooperation in the future, together with promoting economic development and employment, and good governance” said Oesch.

Ms. Jelena Rakovic Radivojevic, the mayor of Uzice, stated that the city is making special efforts to improve energy efficiency and thanked the Ministry for its support. Mr. Dragan Stoimenovic, Deputy Director of the company "Credo", which was selected as contractor for the works, thanked the Ministry and the City of Uzice and made a commitment to complete all the works will on time.
