A new agreement to strengthen the sustainable development in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) has been formalised.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) Pakistan, the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), and the Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation (IC) on April 28th, 2015 in Peshawar. The MoU guides the overall collaboration among the three signatories for lifting up the sustainable development interventions in KPK.
The SDC Director of Cooperation, Mr. Matthias Weingart, the Additional Chief Secretary of KPK, Dr. Hammad Uwais Agha, and the Country Director of IC Peshawar, Dr. Arjumand Nizami agreed to extend the original MoU till December 31st, 2017. The MoU aims to improve the quality of life and reduce vulnerability of the marginalized communities of KPK.
With the signing of the MoU, the signatories acknowledge the need to improve the sustainability of two SDC funded livelihood projects which are implemented in KPK. One of the projects is “Livelihoods Programme Hindukush”, which has been on-going in districts of Chitral, Lower Dir, Karak and D.I. Khan, and the other Project is “Water for Livelihoods”, implemented in the four districts of Chitral, Karak, Tank, and D.I. Khan. These project interventions aim to improve the agriculture and livestock practices, mitigate disaster risks and build institutional capacities of the community organisations. The two projects also address issues of formal education and adaptation to the climate change.
