In summer 2021, the Swiss Cooperation Office Gaza & West Bank (SDC) launched a  broad consultancy on the culture sector in Palestine. The aim was to identify emerging initiatives and new approaches and partners to enhance links between culture and citizen’s participation. The team of Palestinian researchers was composed by Sabreen AbdulRahman (Teamleader), Huda Odeh and Nesma Naseem.  The study was looking at (a) the local needs, (b) the SDC’s institutional experience and value added, and (c) promising thematic niches that are underfunded. It describes the main actors, donors, and dynamics in the sector and presents the main challenges as reflected in focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with numerous artists and stakeholders in the West Bank and Gaza. The report further highlights opportunities and niches for innovation and provides a set of recommendations for future engagement in the sector. We believe that these proposals are valid not only for SDC, but also a source of inspiration for all donors in the field of culture.
