Young journalists promote democratic values in Mongolia

Local news, 02.10.2018

With journalists playing a vital role in a robust democracy, it is important they are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to report accurately and insightfully on governance issues and Mongolia’s democratisation reforms, particularly in the sphere of citizens’ participation.

Meaningful and inclusive citizen participation in public affairs is a cornerstone of democracy and a vital component in ensuring that public institutions respond to citizens’ needs.

In order to build the capacity of young journalists to promote more inclusive and sustainable development through informed and independent reporting and the advancement of democratic values, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Mongolia trained a new generation of reporters as part of its Civic Engagement Project (CEP).

Up to 50 journalists took part in eight-day CEP courses and weekend lectures, covering topics on human rights, the Sustainable Development Goals, civic engagement, legislative and regulatory development and interpretation, ethics, the use of research data, and individual growth and development. The courses also included two visits to ger districts in the peri-urban areas of Ulaanbaatar.

As a final assignment, the journalists produced eight media stories that were published on the project website and via social media.

A follow-up three-day advanced training, jointly organized by Germany’s Deutsche Welle Akademie (DWA) and the Press Institute of Mongolia, will be held in September for 30 journalists chosen from among the participants at previous trainings. It will focus on further honing the journalists’ skills and knowledge under the guidance of DWA trainer Thomas Kohlmann.

SDC Mongolia believes that this component of the CEP will support freedom of expression, and build a network of journalists who will draw attention to the need for, and benefits of, citizens’ participation and government accountability.
