Swiss experts to UN-Agencies in the frame of the Syria crisis

The ongoing violence in Syria has lead to the displacement of millions of civilians. As of September 2013, an estimated 4.25 million people are internally displaced inside Syria and 2 million people are registered or waiting for their registration with UNHCR in neighbouring Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Egypt.

Direct Action: Support to Families and Communities Hosting Syrian Refugees Phase III [PRO]

Protective host shelter environment for 27’000 Syrian refugees is provided for 6 months through support to 3,200 Lebanese families hosting Syrian refugees in Akkar Region (Wadi Khaled and Akroum areas). This project will be implemented through a SDC direct action cash modality and in partnership with a local NGO, Mada Association; in close coordination with Lebanese local authorities of affected municipalities and communities, INGOs working in the area and UNHCR.

The aim of the programme is to increase Switzerland's presence within the UN system. This measure also meets the more general aim of strengthening the influence and quality of Switzerland's political dialogue with the target agencies. The JPO programme will eventually serve to intensify this political dialogue and increase Switzerland's capacity to monitor the work of agencies through direct contact with the JPOs recruited through this programme.

LEB UNDP: Contribution to support to host communities through WASH [BSL]

The increased number of Syrian refugees fleeing to Lebanon especiaily to the Governorate of the North has put enormous pressure an the infrastructure and services of the hosting municipalities. Municipal services such as water, solid waste management, sewage system, electricity have become insufficient to cover the enormous needs of the hosting communities and refugees. This has resulted in tension between host communities and refugees.

UNHCR: Contribution to Lebanon SGBV activities 2013 [PRO]

In response to the high prevalence of violence among Syrian displaced women and girls in Lebanon, which result in various psychosocial symptoms impacting especially women and their family members, the need for more focus and more comprehensive Sexual- and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) services, including shelter services, were identified. The United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR has been addressing these issues and striving to cope with the continuous emerging protection needs of especially women and young people.

Leb- UNICEF Back to school

The Back to School Campaign is jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE), UNHCR and UNICEF. lt is a holistic package of support tor vulnerable Syrian refugees and Lebanese host community children. The response aims at getting vulnerable children enrolled and retained in public schools through support to students during the scholastic year and by working with wider community-based structures to address risk factors of school dropout.

This project will be implemented through a SDC direct action cash modality and in partnership with a local NGO, Mada association. It will be implemented in close coordination with Lebanese local authorities, UNHCR and affected municipalities and communities.

The ongoing violence in Syria has lead to the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians. As of September 2012, more than 250’00 people are registered with UNHCR in neighbouring Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq, putting an increasing strain on the governments and host communities.

Bargeldhilfe für Gastfamilien syrischer Flüchtlinge im Libanon

Eine syrische Familie in ihrer temporären Unterkunft bei einer libanesischen Familie im Dorf Kfartoun im District Akkar an der libanesischen Grenze zu Syrien.

Seit Beginn der Krise in Syrien im März 2011 sind hundertausen­de Menschen, meist Frauen und Kinder, in die Nachbarländer geflohen. Vor allem im Libanon sind viele Flüchtlinge bei Gastfamilien untergebracht, die ihrerseits arm sind. Die DEZA-Direktaktion «Cash for Hosting» unterstützt diese Familien und die Gemeinden, in denen sie leben, mit gezielter Bargeldhilfe.
