National Women’s Health Month to be held in October

Local news, 01.10.2024

The Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic announced the start of the annual “Female Health” Month, which will take place throughout the country from October 1.

The month aims to encourage women over 18 to visit primary health-care facilities for counselling on non-communicable diseases. This initiative is supported by the Swiss project "Effective Management and Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases in Kyrgyzstan".

The Women’s Health campaign seeks to raise awareness and promote early detection, which can reduce the risks of complications. In October women can access free screenings for blood pressure, measure the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases as well as diabetes, check their cholesterol levels and blood sugar, along with receiving consultations on managing and preventing noncommunicable diseases. For this, they can refer to a family doctor or nurse at Primary Health Care facilities in their place of residence.

Noncommunicable diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, are widely spread among women in Kyrgyzstan. Last year in October more than 400,000 women underwent preventive examinations in primary health facilities. Among them, over 103,000 (26%) women were detected to be at a high risk.

Over the past four years from 2020 to 2023, a total of more than 15,000 women have been registered with diabetes, and 45,000 women have been newly diagnosed with hypertension. Moreover, breast cancer and cervical cancer are one of the primary causes of cancer-related deaths in women.

The Swiss project “Effective Management and Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases in Kyrgyzstan”, financed by the Swiss Government, helps to improve the health and wellbeing of the Kyrgyz population through equitable access to quality primary care services and the promotion of healthier lifestyles. The project covered Chui, Naryn, Talas and Issyk-Kul regions and now it covers Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken regions, as well as Bishkek and Osh cities.
