The Embassy of Switzerland in the Kyrgyz Republic, UN Women Country Office in the Kyrgyz Republic, Soros Foundation – Kyrgyzstan, Crisis Center “Sezim” in collaboration with Internews in the Kyrgyz Republic organized a competition with a thematic focus on ending violence against women and girls and harmful practices.

The competition open to media representatives and social activists was launched within the framework of the international campaign “16 days of activism to end violence against women and girls” and the UN Secretary General’s campaign “UNiTE to end violence women”. The yearly 16-day campaign in Kyrgyzstan is traditionally conducted through the efforts of partner organizations, coordinated by UN Women in Kyrgyzstan. The competition featured three categories: TV/radio; print media/internet outlets; and blogs/multimedia (photography, viral videos and audios, posters).

“For several years the Embassy of Switzerland in the Kyrgyz Republic has been supporting these international campaigns aimed at combatting violence against women and girls in Kyrgyzstan. The role of journalists and social activists in raising awareness about gender-based violence is crucial, that is why we have been initiating such competitions already for two years. Unfortunately, gender-based violence remains one of the most widespread and tolerated violations of human rights worldwide. But we can prevent it by joining our efforts”, says the Ambassador of Switzerland to the Kyrgyz Republic, H.E. René Holenstein.
