Around 20’000 inhabitants of the rural areas of Skenderaj have now access to drinking water. The new water supply scheme inaugurated on Wednesday provided the needed infrastructure to supply drinking water to 17 villages in the municipality of Skenderaj, a region, which suffered from significant shortages of drinking water in the past.

The total cost of the investment in Skenderaj amounted to 1.5 million euro and was funded jointly by the Swiss Government and the Kosovo Government.

The Swiss Ambassador to Kosovo Jean-Hubert Lebet stated that Switzerland is proud to have contributed to ensuring access to drinking water to 90% of households throughout the country, starting with an access of only 47% in 1999.

While Switzerland is happy to accept all the acknowledgement expressed today by beneficiaries and partners for the realization of this project, Ambassador Lebet noted that he finds it strange that Switzerland financed this project. The amount invested in this project presents only a 2.5% share of the budget the Government of Kosovo spends on veterans, of which a substantial part is spent on fake veterans.

Switzerland will continue investing in water and sanitation through the Rural Water and Sanitation Support Programme Kosovo (RWSSP) Phase VI, which aims to support public utilities to provide high quality water and sanitation services as well as improve the sustainability and governance of the water service sector.
