Jordanien beherbergt über 600’000 syrische Flüchtlinge auf seinem Staatsgebiet. Das Flüchtlingslager Azraq ist das zweitgrösste Lager im Land. Hier hat die Humanitäre Hilfe der DEZA in Zusammenarbeit mit UNICEF eine Wasserversorgungsanlage gebaut. Sie ermöglicht Tausenden Familien einen direkten Zugang zu Trinkwasser.

Wiederaufbau nach dem Notstand

Die Zerstörung in Syrien ist enorm, und die Zahl der Obdachlosen wächst stetig. Das UNO-Hochkommissariat für Flüchtlinge koordiniert die Wiederaufbauarbeiten vor Ort. Seit Beginn der Syrien-Krise hat die DEZA 13,4 Millionen Franken an die Organisation für ihre Arbeit in Syrien überwiesen. Schweizer Experten waren zudem an der Entwicklung langfristig ausgerichteter Baustandards für die Rückkehr von vertriebenen Bevölkerungsgruppen beteiligt.

Die Schweiz unterstützt die Aktivitäten des IKRK in Syrien

2011 brach die Syrien-Krise aus, die heute zu den schlimmsten humanitären Katastrophen zählt, die die Welt seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs erlebt hat. Das IKRK ist eine der wenigen internationalen Organisationen, die im Landesinnern Hilfseinsätze leisten können. Die DEZA arbeitet mit dem IKRK zusammen, was die Lieferung von Nahrungsmitteln sowie den Zugang zu Wasser und medizinischer Versorgung von Millionen von Syrerinnen und Syrern betrifft, die Opfer dieses Konflikts wurden.

Syrische Flüchtlingskinder werden von einer jordanischen Schulklasse empfangen

In einem gemeinsamen Projekt sanieren die Partnerorganisationen der DEZA und das jordanische Bildungsministerium öffentliche Schulen im Norden des Landes. Ein Grossteil der syrischen Flüchtlingskinder kann in diesen renovierten Schulen aufgenommen werden. Nach einer ersten Sanierung von 29 Schulen wurde das Projekt auf weitere 28 Schulgebäude ausgedehnt.

Bau eines neuen Wasser- und Abwassernetzes für das Flüchtlingslager Jerash

In Jordanien leben viele palästinensische Flüchtlinge immer noch in provisorischen Unterkünften. Nach fünf Jahrzehnten gab es im Lager Jerash immer wieder ernsthafte Gesundheitsprobleme, weil die Zahl von Flüchtlingen ständig anstieg und keine wirksamen Massnahmen zur Verbesserung der Lebensbedingungen getroffen wurden. Eine der grössten Herausforderungen war der beschränkte Zugang zu sauberem Wasser und zu einer zentralen Abwasserentsorgung. Um dieses Problem anzugehen, lancierte die DEZA ein ehrgeiziges Projekt.

Relief International: Providing educational opportunities for Syrian refugees in Za’atari and Azraq camps

SDC’s contribution will help to maintain essential education services provided by Relief International (RI) for Syrian refugee children and youth in Za’atari and Azraq camps especially after the drastic funding cuts announced by UNICEF in June 2018. The project contributes to retain school-aged refugee children in the formal education system by providing support through: 1) Remedial Education services for in-school children with learning difficulties and 2) the certified drop-out programme for out-of-school children who can only go back to school if they complete the programme.

In Jordan water supply from conventional water sources has come to its limits. Appropriate sanitation solutions will minimize the risks for public health and reduce the hazards of environmental pollution. Additionally these will cut the costs for sanitation operations and free resources for other purposes. Thus the project will contribute to the much needed decoupling of population and economic growth from resource consumption and pollution of the environment.

The amount of water available from conventional sources in Jordan is decreasing dangerously, the population is increasing constantly and additional sources are needed urgently. By using treated wastewater as an alternative resource Jordan could reduce its dependence on fresh water. Proven Swiss expertise in the sanitation sector aims at increasing the efficiency of wastewater treatment systems and on turning wastewater streams into physical and financial resources. This will not only provide additional water but also reduce health risks and protect groundwater.
