State Secretary Pascale Baeriswyl in Japan to foster political dialogue

The State Secretary of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs met with Japanese officials and academics in Tokyo to discuss domestic and international challenges.

Ms. Baeriswyl visited Tokyo from July 10 to July 11 in order to hold consultations in the framework of the regular policy dialogue with Japan. To this effect, she held talks with Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Kazuyuki Yamazaki on Tuesday, July 10. Both sides acknowledged excellent bilateral relations between Switzerland and Japan, discussed various domestic and international political issues, such as the Japanese presidency of the G20, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the situation in the Korean peninsula, and human rights issues, including capital punishment.

The State Secretary then met with Dr. Kuniko Inoguchi, Member of the House of Councillors, and Secretary General of the Japan-Swiss Friendship League of the House of Representatives, as well as with Ambassador Kenichi Sasae, President and Director-General of the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA).
