A major event for Swiss culture in Japan this year, the exhibition “Alberto Giacometti: Collection Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght” has opened its doors on June 13th at the National Art Center in Tokyo. The exhibition is part of the celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the National Art Center and features 130 works by Alberto Giacometti. The Swiss artist was born in a small village of Grisons and studied in Geneva before moving to Paris.

Alberto Giacometti had a close relationship with Japan through his friendship with philosopher Isaku Yanaihara. Yanaihara lived in Paris and served as a model for Giacometti when the artist was experimenting with increasingly elongated silhouettes and shapes. Their relation is documented in some parts of the exhibition.

After the opening, Mr. Laurent Pic, Ambassador of France to Japan, cultural attachés of the French Embassy, directors of the National Art Center and TBS, members of the Japan-Switzerland Parliamentarians’ Friendship League, key persons in Japanese cultural institutions as well as the Switzerland-Japan business scene and other distinguished guests gathered at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Ambassador Jean-François Paroz for three short presentations by the director of the Maeght Foundation, Mr. Olivier Kaeppelin, and two curators at the National Art Center, Ms. Mitsue Nagaya, chief curator and Ms. Yukiko Yokoyama, associate curator. The speeches were followed by a reception.

The exhibition is on display until September 4th at the National Art Center, Tokyo. It will then be shown at the Toyota City Museum of Art in Aichi from October 14th until December 24th.
