Political talks, innovation and regional cooperation: Swiss President Didier Burkhalter visits Slovakia

On Tuesday 9 December 2014, President of the Swiss Confederation Didier Burkhalter will take part in the summit of the Visegrad Group, which comprises Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary alongside Slovakia. The Visegrad countries will be represented in Bratislava by their prime ministers. In addition, Mr Burkhalter is to meet with Slovakian President Andrej Kiska, Prime Minister Robert Fico and Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák for bilateral talks.

The “Healing Regions” project, that has been implemented within the framework of the Swiss-Hungarian Cooperation Programme, aimes at increasing the competitiveness of health and medical tourism in Northern Hungary and the North Great Plain regions. In the course of the three-year implementation, the Swiss Contribution provided almost HUF 300 million for the innovative development of these areas.

Application for asylum by Hungarian citizens: procedures within 48 hours

The Federal Office for Migration (FOM) examines the applications for asylum of EU-member citizens in an accelerated procedure. The reception and processing centres decide at first instance within 48 hours on all cases which, like applications by EU member citizens, do not need further clarification. Rejected asylum seekers have to leave the country and do not benefit from any return assistance or refund of travelling expenses.

CHF 190 million for a sustainable energy policy

Switzerland is supporting a sustainable energy policy in six partner countries with around CHF 190 million from its enlargement contribution. In Estonia, for example, the contribution is being used to make the design of three preschools and a home for the elderly more energy efficient. Four Estonian communities showcased their building projects on 14 March 2014. In February 2014, Switzerland approved a project to institutionalise the energy city label in Romania.
