Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter was re-elected by the United Federal Assembly on Wednesday to serve another period in office, garnering 217 of the 231 eligible votes in the first round. Mr Burkhalter has been supported by all political fractions.

This is the second-highest result since the number of National Council members was fixed at 200 in 1962. The record was set in 1971 when the Basel-Stadt social democrat, Hans-Peter Tschudi, was appointed with 220 votes.

Mr Burkhalter has been a federal councillor since September 2009. He has headed the FDFA for the last four years. His previous position was as minister of the interior. In 2014, Mr Burkhalter served as both the President of the Confederation and the Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
