The partnership provides a platform for exchange of experiences and know-how on sustainable development between stakeholders from the public, business and civil society sectors in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Switzerland. It focuses on learning from the Swiss good practices and adopting these in Bosnia and Herzegovina for governing the processes and mobilizing different actors for localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Background Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) faces ongoing development challenges due to its complex governance structure, political disputes, economic stagnation, and social inequalities. Yet, BiH is committed to global development priorities and has adopted its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Framework. The SDG Council of BiH, an intergovernmental body, plays a key role in driving the country’s sustainable development. Switzerland, a country advanced in sustainable development, offers valuable experience in implementing the SDGs. The two countries have common challenges in managing SDGs within a federal state with decentralized governance structures. Coordination, harmonization across governance levels, and a focus on localisation are key areas of mutual interest for experience exchange.
Target Improve governance of the SDG implementation and inspire sustainable development interventions in BiH based on mutual learning and broad exchange of knowledge and experience with Switzerland.
Target group Representatives of the public, civil and business sector from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Switzerland
Outcomes
  1. The institutions in charge of managing processes for achieving the 2030 Agenda in BiH are more effective at fulfilling their mandates.
  2. Business actors from BiH and Switzerland establish partnerships leading to more sustainable business practices.
  3. The civil society organisations and academic community in both countries are more aware of the value of the 2030 Agenda and actively contribute to implementation of the SDGs.
Results

Expected Results:

The partnership will keep flexible approach without predefined outputs in order to be able to address arising needs and opportunities for cooperation. For example, outputs could include the following:

  • Interested municipalities/cities from BiH and from Switzerland jointly work on the SDG implementation, monitoring and reporting
  • A new academic programme on sustainable development is initiated in BiH
  • Interested CSOs from BiH and Switzerland establish cooperation in the SDG implementation
  • Interested businesses from BiH and Switzerland cooperate with a focus on SDGs

Results from previous phase:

Baseline from 2024:

  • There are only few municipalities in BiH that actively integrate SDGs in their development planning.
  • The citizens in BiH are largely unaware of the importance of sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda.
  • There is no digital platform in BiH for monitoring the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
  • There are no academic programmes on sustainable development in BiH.
  • CSOs do not sufficiently engage in implementation, monitoring and reporting on SDGs.
