Career guidance is crucial for a good match between job seekers and the job market, however in Albania there is no career specialists or profession yet. This is about to change according to RisiAlbania – a project that is introducing career guidance as a concept and practice.

Today’s conference at the Youth Centre in Tirana discussed the cooperation underway between the Municipality of Tirana, the Ministry of Education and the Swiss-funded project to establish career centres and guides.

“Well-trained career specialists are the missing link between young job-seekers and the job market. In addition, schools and universities must start to include career coaching and guidance in their curriculum”, said Swiss Ambassador Christoph Graf. “Career coaches improve the matching of an individual’s aspirations with the labour market’s demands” added Ambassador Graf.

At the conference the Deputy Minister of Education Ervin Demo said: “Career counselling in universities needs consolidation, enrichment and quality growth”.

Deputy Mayor of Tirana Arbjan Mazniku announced that his municipality in cooperation with RisiAlbania will mobilise all available resources to establish and consolidate career guuidance services.

Swiss expert Willi Schweizer presented examples from Switzerland and showed how the canton of Bern provides vocational and career counselling to job seekers.

Edmont Rapti from the Faculty of Social Sciences spoke about the challenges of career advising as a profession in Albania.

The aim is now to provide career guidance at all stages of career moves starting with 15 year old youngsters up to university level students and young job seekers.

RisiAlbania works to improve youth employment and introduced new models of job matching with the focus on Agroprocessing, Tourism and ICT as these sectors have more promising potential for youth employment.

The project is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by the Swiss consultancy Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation and local NGO Partners Albania for Change and Development.
